- A “Right to Know” law would ensure that civilians be informed of their rights any time they are stopped by an RPD officer. The law would also required RPD officers to identify themselves and explain the reason for their stop.
- In November 2023, the PAB recommended that the City of Rochester adopt a local “Right to Know” law to provide the same level of accountability as our neighboring cities, Syracuse and Buffalo, which have already enacted such laws. We also recommended that the City of Rochester codify the mandate to collect and report specific data to improve how Rochesterians measure police activity, and that all resulting datasets be up-to-date and machine-readable.
- As of January 12th 2024 , the Public Safety Committee of the Rochester City Council has not introduced the “Right to Know” legislation.
