Where You Will Work

The Police Accountability Board is an independent agency within the City of Rochester charged with overseeing and reimagining Rochester’s policing system. The Board investigates potential wrongdoing by Rochester police officers, brings change and transparency to the Rochester Police Department, and educates and engages community members in the work of reimagining public safety. The Board is committed to performing these tasks in a workplace defined by accountability, equity, transparency. The Board’s headquarters are located in Rochester’s downtown core.

What You Will Do

This employee uses traditional and modern mass-communication techniques to raise awareness of Board activities and solicit community involvement and input. This position requires a high degree of organic and intuitive creative ability. Utilizing the web and social media, a highly specialized skillset is required for writing and content management to ensure that the information is accurate, relevant, engaging and transparent. The position will use industry-standard tools to ensure the Board’s web presence is dynamic, interactive, and provides content in a manner that compels return visits, fosters confidence in the Board, and promotes an active interest in the affairs of the Board. The employee works under general supervision. Occasional participation in PAB community engagement efforts as and when required.

Qualifications & Additional Requirements

To qualify for this position, you must meet have a high school diploma or G.E.D. PLUS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in a field closely related to communications, public relations, journalism, or English; and
  2. Five (5) years of experience writing material for public dissemination (such as social media posts, promotional materials, radio or television announcements, or news releases); and
  3. Five (5) years of experience developing social media strategies and content (which can overlap with the five years of experience described above).

If hired for this position, you will have one year to move within the City of Rochester. Continued residency in the City will be required throughout your tenure. 

This jobs falls within the “competitive” class of civil service positions. If you are hired to this position, you will be given a provisional appointment that allows you to work in the position until a civil service exam is created and administered.
