Where You Will Work

The Police Accountability Board is an independent agency within the City of Rochester charged with overseeing and reimagining Rochester’s policing system. The Board investigates potential wrongdoing by Rochester police officers, brings change and transparency to the Rochester Police Department, and educates and engages community members in the work of reimagining public safety. The Board is committed to performing these tasks in a workplace defined by accountability, equity, transparency. The Board’s headquarters are located in Rochester’s downtown core.

What You Will Do

The Deputy Chief of Oversight works in the Board’s Policy & Oversight Division. The Deputy leads and guides oversight investigations aimed at identifying systemic issues within the Rochester Police Department. The Deputy will issue information requests, draft subpoenas, hold oversight hearings, and issue investigative reports. Occasional participation in PAB community engagement efforts as and when required. Flexibility to work occasional nights and weekends as needed.

Who We Are Looking To Hire

The ideal candidate for this position is an attorney with significant experience obtaining information from police departments, either through civil litigation, criminal litigation, or another legal avenue. Typical work experience for an ideal candidate would be that gained in a state attorney general’s office, a public defender’s office, plaintiff’s side firm, or a civil rights non-profit. We are also looking for a candidate who can be a creative thinker, driving the Board’s oversight activities to uncover parts of the policing environment that often go unseen.

Minimum Qualifications & Additional Requirements

To qualify for this position, you must have (at minimum):

  1. Graduated from a law school of recognized standing; and 
  2. Two (2) years of experience as an attorney admitted to practice in New York State.

This position has a residency requirement. If hired for this position, you will have one year to move within the City of Rochester. Continued residency in the City will be required throughout your tenure.
